How to make our wax batik

To understand the process of wax batik, we want to give you an insight step by step of making wax batik by Vindya De Silva.

The process of batik creation

Step one

Draw the design on the fabric.

Step two

Stretch the fabric onto the wax table.

Step three

Melt the wax mixture (paraffin wax + beeswax).

Step four

Draw the design with hot wax using the wax tools.

Step five

Prepare the dye bath.

Step six

Put the waxed fabric into the dye bath for colouring.

Step seven

Let the wax batik dry in the natural air.

Step eight

Dewax the fabric by boiling the fabric in hot water pot.

Meet Vindya

Vindya De Silva has taken courses in Batik but is also self taught. She loves experimenting and trying out new things. We work closely with Vindya who is a mother to two daughters. She has her own little workshop, where she develops beautiful batik.

Vindya has her own home based business that she started in 2021, the peak of the pandemic, which was truly a hard time for everyone, but it was a blessing in disquise because she got the time to truly explore a craft that she allways dreamt of pursuing. This passion centered venture is run by herself and assisted by her two daughters. She and her daughters hope to use this business as their creativ outlet and to share the beauty of traditional craft of batik with urumaya.

Who makes our furniture

To embrace the process of slow furniture every piece is crafted with meticulous attention to detail. We work with Zully, who is the founder of Cane Cult, based in Sri Lanka.

Step one

Making the frame of the chair by hand.

Step two

The frame of the chair is ready for the weaving part.

We use cane or danish cord for the weaving. All natural.

Step four

The craftmanship is done with the know how of locals.

Carefully checked.

Meet Zully & Jalal

Zully and her brother Jalal encountered the intricate art of cane weaving. They meet artisans in small workshops, where they transform local rattan into beautiful, functional pieces.

Zully’s and Jalal’s mission is to support these craftsmen and introduce their extraordinary skills to a broader audience. We support this way of working with locals in their community and giving the awareness of Sri Lankan craftsmanship.

We have choosen to use a cotton bag for packing the bedsheets and want to share the process of making this.
