Treatment
Additional information
Teak treatment depends on whether you want to maintain its original golden-brown color or let it age naturally into a silvery-grey patina.
1. Maintaining the Golden Look (Oiling)
- Cleaning: Scrub the wood with a mild detergent and water (or a specialized teak cleaner) to remove dirt and algae. Let it dry completely for at least 24 hours.
- Sanding: Lightly sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper (around 180–220) to smooth the grain and remove any oxidation.
- Oiling: Apply a high-quality teak oil with a cloth or brush. Wipe off any excess oil after 15–20 minutes to avoid a sticky surface. Repeat 1–2 times a year.
2. Natural Aging (The Silver Patina)
- Minimal Effort: Teak’s high oil content protects it from rot and insects without any chemical treatment.
- Maintenance: Simply wash the wood once a year with soapy water and a soft brush to prevent mold buildup. Over time, UV exposure will naturally turn the wood a sophisticated silver-grey.
Key Tips:
- Never use a pressure washer: It blasts away the soft fibers of the wood, leaving the surface rough and prone to splintering.
- Avoid “Teak Sealers” unless necessary: Sealers sit on top of the wood, while oils soak in. Sealers are better for high-traffic indoor items, while oil is standard for outdoor furniture.
